I'm now one of the two resident DBS-accredited coaches that volunteer our coaching for free at Hollins Grove Junior Snooker Academy in Darwen, Lancashire. The academy has been running for over 10 years and is for all children, regardless of snooker experience, under the age of 18. We're open most Saturdays, from 10am until 12 noon.
For new starters, we go through some simple technique drills designed to develop simple potting skills straight away. Depending on numbers, we also offer a mixture of 1-1 coaching and group sessions with fun snooker-themed activities. Afterwards, I'm also available at the club for private coaching and can offer a reduced rate for juniors - please check my Pricing page for more information.
Weekly admission costs just £1 for two hours' play. We're an inclusive club and are keen to encourage young snooker enthusiasts regardless of background or ability. Boys and girls are equally welcome - snooker is one of the few sports where men and women are able to compete on an equal footing. My colleague and other resident coach, Annette Lord, has competed on the Women's Snooker Tour, which gets stronger every season.
Nationally, there's also a growing number of tournaments on the English Junior Tour, so there are fantastic opportunities for young players to make progress in the game. The academy already has an excellent track record of developing young talent.
We have ex-Academy players now competing on the English Amateur Tour, and several other former Academy regulars now enjoy their snooker socially or by competing in a number of different local leagues.
